estes park

Our friend’s birthday and Valentine’s Day happened to end up close to each other this year so we all took as it as a sign to get away for the weekend. In an effort to avoid some of the ski crowd, we headed up to Estes Park. Just in case you were wondering, that’s a town.. not an actual park.  Not that I was confused about that being a small town Minnesota girl when we moved here so many years ago.  Not at all. We rented a house together and headed up Friday after work and stayed through a massive brunch before heading back down. Dreams of snowshoeing through the trails were slightly derailed by 50 degree temperatures.. and dreams of hiking were slightly derailed by 30-50 mph wind gusts. Dreams of relaxation were derailed by nothing. #winning Estes Park sits at the edge of Rocky Mt. National Park. And if you’ve ever been there before, you may know that elk sighting is not rare at all to say the least.  While hiking was a bit breezy, searching for elk from the warmth of a car was the perfect evening activity…

currently obsessing

A potential snow shoeing adventure is in our near future however the 60 degree weather may turn our snow shoeing into hiking. I’m waiting for bedtime until my final batch of monster cookies is done baking.  You know when you start that batch of cookies after work and the internal debate about whether to throw the dough into the fridge for another day or bake just one more batch ensues? The batches were finished on this night.  Boo-ya!  Used this recipe and they are delish! My head is on a constant swivel for long sweaters.  My mom spotted this at the Loft and since they are always having incredible sales I was able to snag it for a great price.  If you saw my closet post-clean out you’d be impressed by the number of clothes I no longer have.  This sweater filled a gaping hole in my wardrobe. I’m saving my pennies for this beautiful purse.  It will probably be years before I take the plunge and buy it but the style is singing to me.  Singing…. While I’m pumped that the Broncos won the Super Bowl, I…

sleeping in

I know it’s been slightly hard to tell, but the days are slowly getting longer.  It’s not quite light out when we wake up but by the time I get out the door I have some welcome rays of sunshine. And on weekends, I can officially wake up with the sun without being too lazy about it. The most exciting news about sleeping in… Remember this mess?!?! After far too long (ahem) the bedroom is finally painted and put back together. The reason for the whole painting mess in the first place? The barn door.  Still not up.  But it has some freshly painted walls to hang on! I’ll show pictures of that.. and the cleaned out closet.. once everything is finished.  Progress…

Cape Town, South Africa: The V&A Waterfront

I traveled to Cape Town between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It goes to show how crazy life has been that I’m now getting around to sorting through photos of my trip. My time in Cape Town started with a day at the V&A Waterfront, a short walk from the city center. While I would definitely describe this area as a tourist trap, it was a beautiful day nonetheless. If you haven’t already planned and booked all of your activities, there are a plethora of opportunities advertised along the docks. From short trips in a boat around the bay to swimming with sharks to paragliding, vendors will be advertising their trips and are open to bartering for the best price. During the short walk to the waterfront, I was adopted by an older German couple after some unsavory characters attempted to swindle us out of a few hundred Rand. In their broken English, Claus and Connie invited me to take one of the boat tours around the bay. I agreed, expecting to go out in one of the many motor boats swarming with tourists. I should have expected more from my stubborn German adopters. As we…
